WHAT IS IT?

WHAT’S THE FURTHEST PLACE FROM HERE? is a new ongoing sci-fi/fantasy series from Matthew Rosenberg (Uncanny X-Men, Punisher, We Can Never Go Home) and Tyler Boss (Dead Dog’s Bite, Department of Truth).

Here is what the solicit says-

“A post-apocalyptic coming-of-age story from 4 Kids Walk into a Bank's TYLER BOSS & MATTHEW ROSENBERG.
The world has ended. All that remains are gangs of children living among the ruins. But Sid believes there must be something more out there. When she disappears into the wastelands, her gang will risk everything to bring her home. A story about the things that matter most-your survival, your loved ones, and your record collection.”

But to give you a bit more info, this is a book Tyler and I have been working on in one form or another since 4 KIDS ended. It’s something we’re really passionate about. Basically we took all the stuff we love but didn’t get to do in 4 Kids and put it here. It’s got a big sci-fi world, an epic fantasy adventure, an intriguing mystery driving it, and really creepy horror elements sprinkled throughout. But at its heart we wanted to make sure it felt like us and felt like something only we could make, so it’s very personal, character driven, and full of heart and humor.

WHO IS IT FOR?

WTFPFH? is a T+ series (for language and a some violence). We wanted to make something that felt both really unique to get people excited and very familiar to keep them coming back. So we wear our influences on our sleeves here but we’ve smashed them together into something new. We joke that it’s sort of The Breakfast Club and Catcher In The Rye meets Mad Max and The Warriors. But that’s probably not what you should tell people.

With it’s big sci-fi worlds, epic adventure feel, and a focus on kids doing what it takes to survive, I’d say it’s a good fit for fans of SWEET TOOTH, PAPER GIRLS, I HATE FAIRYLAND, SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN, THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, or even ATTACK ON TITAN .

WHAT ARE WE DOING TO MAKE IT SPECIAL?

A bunch of things. We were getting ready to launch this series when Covid hit last year and honestly we got really scared that when the book came out there wouldn’t be any comic shops left to buy it. So Tyler and I went back to the drawing board to try and make a book that stores and fans could really invest in, and make something that would excite long time readers and put new people into comic shops. We invested a lot of time and a lot of money to really try and make a book and an experience that feels different.

• More Book for Your Buck.The first issue is 64 pages so people can really feel like they are getting into our world and we can take our time to build the story the way it should be told. And we kept it to $4.99 so it wouldn’t scare off new readers and you’d still make a little more for the shelf space. The 2nd and 3rd issues are both 48 pages and the price drops to $3.99.

• Great Covers. We were hoping to make the book returnable but right before we solicited Diamond changed the rules on that. And because we have hired a ton of amazing artists to do covers for the book we were no longer eligible, which is a bummer. BUT we still have great covers from folks like Martin Simmonds, Marcos Martín, Jenny Frison, and Skottie Young. Also the amazing artist and designer Courtney Menard drew out a map of the world our story takes place in and we are releasing those as 6 connecting covers that form a giant map! Plus Brian Michael Bendis drew his first… anything in over a decade and gave us an amazing cover! And that’s just the issue #1 lineup.

• The Record. You may have noticed we have a deluxe version that includes a 7” featuring Blake Schwarzenbach of legendary punk band Jawbreaker and southern California’s punk darlings Joyce Manor. They each recorded a song specifically for this book. If you aren’t familiar with either band, you should check them out because they’re great. But you should also know that both bands have rabid followings and we really expect their fans to be seeking out the record. And we made sure it was only available in comic book stores! We believe that the potential crossover between comic collectors and record collectors is a very real thing and the simple act of putting those bands fans into shops could really be a big deal.

• More Coming. Each issue will offer another deluxe version with 2 more hot indie bands recording songs specifically to be the soundtrack to our book. And not only will each record generate a new round of excitement from new music fans discovering the series, but new press opportunities from outside the normal comics press. We have already lined up a bunch of great press to cover the book and the records in the coming months. Combine that with the bands themselves pushing them and it could be something really exciting.

• It’s For A Good Cause. Both Tyler and myself are incredibly fortunate to get to do what we do and whenever possible we try to give back. So we decided to donate 100% of the profits from every single deluxe edition sold to various small, grassroots charities and organizations that help improve the quality of life for others. We are working with the bands to pick the charities so they will change for each release, but you can feel good knowing that every copy sold puts money towards a good cause.

• The Book is Really Good. I don’t love boasting and would rather the work speak for itself always, but we’ve worked really hard to make something that doesn’t read like anything else on shelves. We’re both tremendously proud of this book and honestly think if people give it a chance they will care as much about this world and these characters as we do.
